Guitar Ensemble And Jazz Band Concert Continues Virtually This Year

By: Miles Johnson

The show must go on — even virtually.

Murrow’s annual spring Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Band concert will go on virtually tonight at 7 PM and will highlight the accomplishments of these talented school musicians.

For Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Band teacher, Mr. Peter Douskalis, putting on the spring concert might be seen as more difficult to put on because of the pandemic, but he is up for the challenge.

“The first and most important part is making sure the students know how to do their part and how to do it well,” said Mr. Douskalis, one of the teachers that will be editing for the spring concert. “It is a front-end time investment, but if done correctly, the syncing of audio and videos is actually quite a seamless process.”

Mr. Douskalis said he believes that things will go smoothly if students practice what they need to. However, there can be many issues if students do not practice.

In order to get it right, each student participating in the spring concert had to record a video from home and send it to the person editing it so that the video sounds like everyone is playing one song together. While this sounds simple, many problems can arise from this method.

The performance is not live which means that students will not be able to hear each other play. The concert will be more difficult to play at the correct tempo because it is not live. This is why it is important to not only play at the correct tempo when recording but to also practice the part so that playing at that tempo is not so difficult.

“I don’t practice everyday,” said Matthew Karten, a tenor saxophone player in the Jazz Band. “But when I do practice I try to practice for at least an hour.”
